Beginning Digital Continuing Studies Program


Class Description

If you're interested in a continuing studies program from Beginning DSLR through Digital Printing this series of 12 evening sessions in photography education is for you. You'll learn camera basics, exposure basics, camera control basics, composition techniques, photo composition, image editing and printing.

Camera Basics 1/2 - Tuesday, February 4th, 11th - 6:30-9:00pm
Through handouts, visual displays and hands on instruction we will unlock the main functions of your digital camera. Bring your camera and fully charged batteries.

Topics Covered: Camera Modes • Shooting Modes • Scene Modes • Metering Modes Megapixels • Resolution • Digital Media • Focusing • Zoom Lenses • White Balance • Flash • ISO Rating


Exposure Basics 1 -  Tuesday, February 18th - 6:30-9:00pm
An introduction to exposing an image correctly. We will discover how to take control of the camera and achieve desired and predictable results. Bring your camera and fully charged batteries to class. Be prepared to print 10 -12 images for review from optional assignment.

Camera Control Basics 1/2 -  Tuesday, February 25th, March 11th - 6:30-9:00pm
We will continue to take control of our camera to achieve the desired depth of field and and subject sharpness by learning how to adjust the aperture and shutter speeds in the camera. Bring your camera and fully charged batteries to class. Be prepared to print 10 -12 images for review from optional assignment.

Composition Techniques 1/2 -  Tuesday, March 18th, April 1st -  6:30-9:00pm
A discussion of what makes a good image. We will cover basic compositional elements and how to incorporate them into an image. Please bring 3-5 printed or digital images to the class sessions.

Photo Composition 1/2 -  Tuesday, April 8th, 15th- 6:30-9:00pm
A continuation of what makes a good image. We will discuss how to bring your vision of a scene into reality. Please bring 3-5 printed or digital images to the class sessions.

Topics Covered: Critique • Vision • Interest • Energy • Emotion


Image Editing 1/2 -  April 22nd, April 29th - 6:30-9:00pm
An introduction into digital workflow. We will rename, edit, keyword, tag and rate images to easily identify the best. We will cover a basic workflow for fine tuning your images.

Topics Covered: Camera Raw vs. Jpeg • Color Balance • Editing Controls • Sharpening


Digital Printing 1 -  Tuesday May 6th- 6:30-9:00pm
An introduction into preparing your digital files for printing including page setup, sheet vs. roll, paper ICC pofiles and the print dialogue box. Each student will be able to print five images.

Richard Guttman: Richard Guttman is a practicing professional photographer and photography instructor. He has successfully taught this photography program to many beginning photographers. Wherever you are in your photographic journey, he can lead you down a path of a deeper understanding of the craft and increased confidence in creating images through knowledge of your camera, understanding of composition, and a proficient digital workflow.
