Beginning Digital Photography - An Introduction to Digital SLR Photography

Class Description

Are you intimidated by your new digital SLR camera? Confused by all its modes? Do you shoot in RAW mode? Should you?

This class will take you beyond “point and shoot” mode. You’ll learn to use the power of your digital SLR camera, which camera features are most important, and how to set the menus to access them. You’ll artistically control what is in focus and what is not. And creatively compose images in the frame. After learning the camera basics of your particular camera you’ll shoot assignments that are tailored to teach you the skills you’ll need to be comfortable with your camera.

We’ll shoot in the morning, have a lunch provided by the Photo Center( please contact MPC at least several days in advance of the class date if you have special dietary considerations.) then we will break into groups and photograph each other to better understand light and how to take pictures of people.

The goal will always be to have fun with your camera and to shoot pictures you like.

Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:

  • Understand the relationship between f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO
  • Know when to use aperture priority, shutter priority, and even “P” mode
  • Use f-stop to creatively control focus
  • Set ISO for various light conditions
  • Shoot in raw mode
  • Know when you need to use a tripod, and how to use one
  • Compose pictures artistically
  • Use fill-flash to soften harsh shadows
  • Adjust the exposure when the camera gets it wrong

Class Requirements

Have a digital camera that can use manual exposure mode (cameras can be rented from the Mpls Photo Center). Please bring the owner’s manual for your camera.

About the Instructor

Instructor Photo

Steve Bye: After shutting down his wet darkroom many years ago, Steve's interest in photography was rekindled when the first photo inkjet printers became available. Though their quality at the time was not very good, digital photography using inkjet printers seemed worth investigating. Now, fifteen years later, Steve is an Adobe Certified Instructor of Photoshop. Steve's strength as a teacher is in explaining difficult concepts in easily understandable ways, a skill learned while at Hewlett-Packard as a trainer, engineer, and R&D project manager.
