Demystifying the Darkroom

Class Description

Watch as your images appear before your very eyes in the developing tray! Learn to create pictures the old-fashioned way!

Discover the magic of the darkroom as you learn to process your own 35mm film and create gorgeous, archival, black & white prints.

This course introduces the technical processes of traditional, black and white darkroom photography, from camera operation and film developing to darkroom techniques and print finishing.
 
The class tuition included a $75 lab fee which includes film, sleeves, paper and chemicals.
 
Students will have the opportunity to use MPC’s darkrooms throughout the five class sessions.

Class Requirements

1st session: 1.5 hours - Intro to the 35mm SLR: aperture & shutter speed, light meters, loading film, lenses, etc. Go out and shoot!

2nd session: 2.5 hours - Processing film & making contact sheets

3rd session: 4 hours - The editing process, making enlargements. Time to print with guidance and feedback.

4th session - 4 hours - Advanced printing techniques: dodging & burning, split filter printing, contrast controls, etc.

5th session - 3 hours - Print finishing: spot toning, presentation options, group discussion/ critique.

This class is limited to six students
