Layne Kennedy: On Location at the State Fair


Class Description

Join acclaimed editorial magazine photographer Layne Kennedy for " Minnesota State Fair" in his hugely popular "72 Hours" series of workshops. Photographers explore a variety of State Fair visitors, vendors, rides and events as well as behind the scenes locations, photographing Minnesota's "Great Get Together". The results of your work will be editing your images, thereby developing a visual theme and "Blurb" published book.

Participants will work under the direction of Layne, shooting assorted lighting conditions and work through challenging locations. Layne helps participants explore the technical and psychological challenges of working with people, vendors, rides and events as well as behind the scenes looks at the State Fair. Paramount to the goals of this Weekend Workshop is a close examination of the relationships between photographers and their subjects, locations and lighting situation. The class will combine on evening of preliminary class introduction, Workshop- shooting plans and expectations for next day's all day shooting schedule.


A third day is dedicated to; student image edit and producing a class book via Blurb.com. Join Layne on this extraordinary workshop that leaves the shooter with a book to reflect upon and learn from for years to come.

Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:

  • The value of this workshop is learning to develop a personal theme, edit tightly, and produce a body of work representing the effort in book form. Blurb.com is one of the nation's best online book publishers. Each participant will upload their own book and receive one in approx tow weeks after the workshop. Participants can use the book for personal purposes and sell the book on the Blurb.com website.

Class Requirements

Students will pay for their own admission to the State Fair, transportation, parking fees (if any). We will car pool if people are interested.

You will need your own equipment,including digital SLR, memory cards and card readers, , card readers to download and create tiff files for book. The Center's Digital Lab, its iMacs and software programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom will be available for editing your digital files.

Students will be responsible for the cost of the final Blurb Book

Layne Kennedy: Layne Kennedy's photography covers a wide range of subject matter and locations. Specializing in magazine feature assignments, his work has appeared in over a hundred different magazines world-wide on subjects as diverse as Wolves in the Northern Hemisphere to boat builders in the Caribbean.
