Smoke & Mirrors: A Journey into Healing

Photographer Vance Gellert has been interested in how we heal for almost 50 years. He pursued his passion in pharmacology but an experience with peyote brought him to plants as sources of new medicines. He sought answers in traditional and indigenous practices in Bolivia and Peru. Revelations led to more questions. He looked into shamanic and western biomedicine – Abbott/Northwestern, HCMC, Bakken Museum, Chinatown. Interestingly, the answers came out the same. It’s a big mystery. As Ted Kaptchuk, researcher of placebo effect at Harvard says – “it’s magic”. Smoke & Mirrors. The Wizard of Oz, revealed in his ruse of smoke and mirrors was still able to heal the tin man, lion and scarecrow, and get Dorothy home; he simply asked them to believe.
