According to Richard:
"The War Road portfolio is a look at and ride along with the victims and victors of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. On assignment for the Star Tribune, I have traveled battle roads with the Kurdish fighters the Pesh Merga and the Minnesota Army National Guard both in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Kurdistan I photographed a roadside wedding, a life and death struggle in the Kirkuk oil fields and the victims of Halabja who are still dying from a gas attack that happened 22 years ago. More recently, I traveled with the Minnesota Army National Guard's 114th Transportation Company, who's main mission in Afghanistan is to carry the stuff of war on the the old silk road. This ancient route has carried goods from East to West for centuries. In Afghanistan the ring road is the main trunk road for commerce, it's the life line and the heart and soul of the Afghanistan economy. It's also one of the main battle grounds of the Taliban insurgency who hold the road hostage with IED's. The 114th is currently doing a kind of end around by leaving the (hardball) or paved roads and driving through dust of the desert and the fog of war in Helmand Province."
