The Film Darkroom: Process & Print
Class Description
Haven’t shot film in a while or set foot in a darkroom for ages? Bring in your black & white film and/or negatives and get reacquainted with the satisfying process of developing and printing your pictures by hand. Film processing and silver printing techniques will be demonstrated, editing tips will be discussed so that you can showcase your best work, and there will be plenty of time to print and process with guidance and feedback.
8 hours total :
1st session: 4 hours – Film processing demonstration, Printing demonstration. Time to process, edit, & print with guidance & feedback
2nd session: 4 hours – Advanced printing techniques: dodging & burning, split filter printing, contrast controls, etc. Time to process, edit, & print with guidance & feedback
Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:
- Using hands-on, tangible image making techniques, you will leave this class with an understanding of: film processing - how to process your own rolls of black and white film by hand editing - how to make good editing choices and showcase your best work
Class Requirements
Required Materials:
• Black & White Film: 2-4 rolls, I suggest using:
Ilford HP5-Plus ISO 400 36 exposure or
Kodak Tri-X ISO 400 36 exposure
And/or
• Black & White negatives, 35mm, medium format, 4x5 may all be used
• Black and white printing paper: approximately 15 sheets: 8” x 10”,
resin coated (RC) silver/chemical printing paper. I suggest buying Illford
brand in Luster or Glossy surface. Do Not Open in the LIGHT!
• 2-5 negative sleeves, 7 strip 5 frame

About the Instructor
Lanny Linehan:
Lanny has been shooting with film cameras over 40 years.. He spent 10 years working in the darkroom of a commercial photo lab printing both color and black & white images. Over the years, he has taught film processing and printing. With his passion for classic photographic techniques, Lanny still uses his own darkroom on a regular basis for film developing and printing.
Lanny is a member of film based Midwest Passage Group and MPC's F-Stop Group.
