Introduction to Digital SLR Photography

Class Description

Are you intimidated by your new digital SLR camera? Confused by all its modes? Do you shoot in RAW mode? Should you?

This class will take you beyond “point and shoot” mode. You’ll learn to use the power of your digital SLR camera, which camera features are most important, and how to set the menus to access them. You’ll artistically control what is in focus and what is not. And creatively compose images in the frame. After learning the camera basics of your particular camera you’ll shoot assignments that are tailored to teach you the skills you’ll need to be comfortable with your camera.

We’ll shoot in the morning, have a lunch provided by the Photo Center( please contact MPC at least several days in advance of the class date if you have special dietary considerations.)then we will break into groups and photograph each other to better understand light and how to take pictures of people.

The goal will always be to have fun with your camera and to shoot pictures you like.

Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:

  • Understand the relationship between f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO
  • Know when to use aperture priority, shutter priority, and even “P” mode
  • Use f-stop to creatively control focus
  • Set ISO for various light conditions
