Michael Crouser: The Portrait

Class Description

Join us for an investigation on what it means to “make” rather than ‘”take” a portrait. This two day Portrait Workshop explores different styles and methods of making revealing portraits that reflect not just the subject but the photographer as well.

A memorable portrait is composed of many elements, from composition to styling to lighting. In the Intimate Portrait workshop we explore and demystify some of the inhibitions photographers confront in the process of creating compelling portraits of people. Through assignments and discussions, Michael Crouser helps students develop a style consistent with their own personality and interests. In addition, develop the awareness and sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Working with fellow students, we learn how to create images that go below the surface and penetrate deeply into a subject’s character.

Michael Crouser imparts the knowledge of the simple lighting techniques that he has used to create memorable portraits throughout his career. Designed for all those wishing to improve their creativity as portrait photographers. If you're interested in gaining confidence and moving forward in the challenging, exhilarating world of the portrait,
Michael is the instructor and this workshop is for you.

Using examples, photo exercises and assignments we will learn ways of connecting with your subject, using lighting and exposure effectively and using composition and cropping to make a strong visual statement.

The biggest element in a successful portrait is the connection with your subject and we will explore ways of fostering this connection. Emphasis will be on going beneath the surface to find what it is you are trying to express with your photos.

The Portrait Workshop takes place in large beautiful natural light studios of Mpls Photo Center, our class will include demonstrations, examples and photo exercises but the main emphasis will be in creating more powerful and insightful images while developing a personal style.
