Dawn to Dusk: 72 Hours with Layne Kennedy


Class Description

Join editorial magazine photographer Layne Kennedy in his documentary workshop Dawn to Dusk. Photographers will explore a variety of Minneapolis and Saint Paul locations developing a visual theme. Participants will combine two full days of shooting, and a third editing and producing their own book via Blurb.com online at MPC. This is a workshop designed to train your lenses on varying subjects, over a set period of time. Weather, schedules, traffic,. ect., all play a role in how this workshop plays out. It is assignment photography at it's core. The theme for this session, Dusk To Dawn, gives participants a wide variety of subject matter in Minneapolis to explore. The emphasis here will be LIGHT. The goal is producing a book for each participant at the conclusion of this workshop from Blurb.com. In addition to the book effort, participants will have selections of their images shown in an all night, slide show "All Night Twilight", exhibited under the cavernous, theatrical space where the Central Avenue Bridge passes over St. Anthony Main on the East Bank.conjunction with Northern Spark. Join Layne on this extraordinary workshop that leaves the shooter with a book to reflect upon and learn from for years to come.

Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:

  • The value of this workshop is learning to develop a personal theme, edit tightly, and produce a body of work representing the effort in book form. Blurb.com is one of the nation's best online book publishers. Each participant will upload their own book and receive one in approx tow weeks after the workshop. Participants can use the book for personal purposes and sell the book on the Blurb.com website.
  • In addition to the book effort, participants will have selections of their images shown in the all night projection on the side of a Minneapolis building in conjunction with Northern Spark.

Class Requirements

Requirements: Students need their own equipment,including digital SLR, memory cards and card readers, transportation, parking fees (if any), card readers to download and create tiff files for book. The Center's Digital Lab, its iMacs and software programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom will be available for editing your digital files.

Students will be responsible for the cost of the Blurb Book

The Mpls Photo Center has 10.2mpx Digital SLRs available for rent at $25/day.

Layne Kennedy: Layne Kennedy's photography covers a wide range of subject matter and locations. Specializing in magazine feature assignments, his work has appeared in over a hundred different magazines world-wide on subjects as diverse as Wolves in the Northern Hemisphere to boat builders in the Caribbean. His strong sense of abstract design, combined with journalistic story telling imagery, makes him a favorite among picture editors. Clients include: National Geographic Society, Life, Fortune, Business Week, Audubon, Sports Illustrated, Outside, Newsweek, Smithsonian, Nikon and Forbes.
