Portrait and Event Retouching

Class Description

In this class you will learn the essential retouches for skin, eyes, teeth, hair, and other issues, and also how to prepare an image correcting in-camera issues. The goal is for students to be able to process and optimize their own images. All demonstrations and classwork will be done using Photoshop, so working knowledge of Photoshop is essential.

This class is for anyone wishing to accomplish more professional-looking retouches, whether you are an event, wedding, commercial lifestyle, or hobbyist photographer.

We start by briefly examining past and present styles of retouching and future directions in retouching, followed by hands-on demonstrations and step-by-step instruction. We learn image assessment and best-practices workflow for the most efficient and successful retouch for single images and quantities. Tools of the trade: the Wacom tablet and different softwares, are introduced.

After a lunch provided by the Photo Center, we work in depth with cloning and healing tools, customizing brushes, using layers and adjustment layers, masking, blending modes, and many more retouching methods. Our goal is to determine which tools and techniques can give us the most natural-looking results under a variety of circumstances, learning more tips and tricks, and evaluating the final result.

On Sunday we do retouches as a class, from start to finish. This is also an ideal time to bring your own examples of troublesome problems, such as difficult reflections in eyeglasses.

Being able to critique one’s own work is a crucial part of good retouching, so throughout the course we will evaluate examples of successful or unsuccessful retouching work in the public domain.

Although many techniques covered can be done using Lightroom or other image processing programs with fine results, due to our two-day class time constraint all demonstrations and classwork will be done using Photoshop.

Class Requirements

Class Requirements:

1) Experience with Photoshop CS5 or higher. We will only briefly review the how-to’s of layers, actions, cloning, healing, and blending modes in class.

2) Wacom tablet (if you do not have one, you may borrow one of ours for the class.)

Because so many restorative techniques require layers, masking, drawing and other precise adjustments, this class uses Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw only.

A prerequisite Photoshop class is recommended if you have no working knowledge of Photoshop. We offer Part 2 of our two-day Photoshop Workshop that teaches valuable layers and layer adjustment techniques. See class list for more information.
