Ray was born and raised in Minnesota in 1954. With an aptitude towards the fine arts, he enrolled in a technical school for commercial photography post high school. After graduating, he started a freelance photography business. Soon he was doing commercial and industrial photography for various clients as well as documentary work. The early 2000’s saw the first digital cameras and Ray seamlessly adapted to the new technology with over 25 years of film and darkroom experience. By 2008, Ray had various projects that were published: travel guide books, scientific documentary work, and publications for the Science Museum of Minnesota.

By 2008, Ray had various projects that were published: travel guide books, scientific documentary work, and publications for the Science Museum of Minnesota. He has since retired from photography except for special projects.
