CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is a unique look at nature close up, and on occasion rare sightings of creatures. The photographs selected for this book are created with the utmost understanding of light and composition. You will encounter mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and arachnids, with a special chapter on insects preserved in amber from thousands of years ago. This collection of images are the author’s best chosen selection from 15 years of traveling all over the U.S. Follow the photographer into his world, view his perspective, and see his encounters.

Ray was born and raised in Minnesota in 1954. With an aptitude towards the fine arts, he enrolled in a technical school for commercial photography post high school. After graduating, he started a freelance photography business. Soon he was doing commercial and industrial photography for various clients as well as documentary work. The early 2000’s saw the first digital cameras and Ray seamlessly adapted to the new technology with over 25 years of film and darkroom experience. By 2008, Ray had various projects that were published: travel guide books, scientific documentary work, and publications for the Science Museum of Minnesota.

About the Instructor

ray colby: Ray Colby was born and raised in Minnesota in 1954. With an aptitude towards the fine arts, he enrolled in a technical school for commercial photography post high school. After graduating, he started a freelance photography business. Soon he was doing commercial and industrial photography for various clients as well as documentary work. By 2008, Ray had various projects that were published: travel guide books, scientific documentary work, and publications for the Science Museum of Minnesota. He has since retired from photography except for special projects.
