The Art of Portraiture: Fundamentals of Portrait Photography

Class Description

Just about anyone who can aim a camera can make a portrait. It goes without saying that some do it better than others. Top portrait photographers do it all the time, reliably producing outstanding portraits with just about every subject they photograph. Making people look good with your camera is an art you can learn in this fast-paced, learn-by-doing class. We will review the fundamentals of portraiture, including examples of great portraits of the past. The instructor will demonstrate using good lighting and posing techniques using a model in the class. Then, we'll move to photographing each other, putting to work what we've just learned about posing and lighting, so you can experience both sides of the camera (essential for being a great portrait photographer). Next, each student will select their three best images from the images they've just created and submit them to the instructor for review. During the review, the instructor will point out strengths and areas to improve in each image, so the whole class can appreciate the skilled work that being a skilled portrait artist requires.

Class Requirements

Card Reader to fit their camera's cards

USB Thumb Drive to transfer images

Laptop if desired; the Center's iMacs will be available to process images in Lightroom or Photoshop

Camera + lens (a lens longer than 50 mm is preferred, 100mm or longer is recommended)

A collapsible reflector, optional but recommended
