Artist Talk: Angela Jimenez - Racing Age


Class Description

Angela Jimenez is a freelance visual storyteller based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she she works on assignment and on long & short term documentary projects.

A long-time contributor to The New York Times, Angela is a contract photographer with the Getty Images creative department and also works with Minnesota Public Radio. Her work has been honored by the Magenta Foundation as a Flash Forward Emerging Photographer, American Photography, New York Press Photographer's Association, Review Santa Fe and the Communication Arts Photo Annual, supported by grants from The Alexia Foundation student award and The Puffin Foundation, and acquired into the permanent collection of the Leslie Lohman Museum for Gay & Lesbian Art.

She crowd-funded and self-published her first book, Welcome Home: Building the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, in 2009. The project was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2008 Duke Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize.

Her second book Racing Age, was published in December of 2016 and is on display at the Mpls Photo Center through January 15. 2017

124-page fine-art, hardcover book featuring 91 black & white documentary photographs and ten essays about competitive masters track & field athletes who are redefining age one jump, throw and race at a time.


 

She regularly collaborates with non-profits, documenting their work & mission: her current clients include PFund Foundation, The Walker Art Center, The Penumbra Theatre and The Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

She has taught photojournalism & multimedia to graduate students in the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and to art majors at Nassau Community College.
