Night Photography: Twin Cities at Twilight
Class Description
Many people put away their cameras when the sun goes down, not realizing that the night presents many unique opportunities for getting creative and having fun with photography. Minneapolis and St. Paul are great places to be at night. The setting sun reflects off downtown buildings and colors streak across the sky, giving way to twilight where lights sparkle on the river and lakes like a chest full of jewels.This ttwo-evening workshop touches on different aspects of using your camera at night. They are designed to gain the knowledge and experience in night photography and discover the many interesting techniques of using your camera at night.
Session 1:
This session is an introduction to night photography that includes all the basic techniques you need to know:
- Capturing a sharp image in low light
- Using slow shutter speeds and bulb setting
- Painting with light
- Mirror up shooting
- HDR photography
- Timed exposures
- Slow sync flash
- Front and rear curtain flash
- Playing with white balance
- Zoom and shutter effects
- Creative use of shutter speeds
Session 2:
We will explore Twin Cities’ cityscapes after dark as a group. We will combine natural light, flash and flashlights to create our images.

Class Requirements
Your camera should be a DSLR camera. A tripod is essential. A cable or wireless release would be helpful, as would an off-camera flash.

About the Instructor
Curtis Juliber:
New York City native Curtis Juliber previously worked for 16 years at Apple Computer in various sales and marketing roles, working with many Twin Cities's ad agencies and publishing organizations. He has an MBA from Minnesota State University and a BSE from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Curtis has been working with digital images since 1994 and is always investigating software technologies to enhance his digital darkroom.
