The Esthetic of Black & White vs Color

Class Description

Join us for a one-weekend workshop drawn from the popular, longer course "Finding Your Voice as a Photographer" with Michael Crouser. There are many choices a photographer can make in the presentation of their imagery, but perhaps none is so basic, or so important as the decision on whether to shoot and present in black and white or in color. In this workshop we will look at several established photographers and their choices between the two and discuss how that impacts a photograph's effectiveness. The second part of this workshop deals with "Print and Presentation Style." In the digital age, black & white vs. color can be a pre or post-capture decision, but the further, infinite manners in which an image is dealt with after the shot, can do much to reflect and determine a photographer's personal voice and style. We will look at the work of several shooters to see how they use post-production to help make their work personal.

About the Instructor

Michael Crouser: Photographer Michael Crouser was born in 1962 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and graduated from Saint John's University (Collegeville, Minnesota) in 1985. He began his commercial career in 1986 and has several prints in the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Crouser's first two books, Los Toros and Dog Run were both honored in CA, PDN and the International Photography Awards. He is currently working on a third book, on the topic of cattle ranching in the mountains of Colorado. Represented by galleries in New York, Santa Fe, Houston and Barcelona. Crouser divides his time between his hometown of Minneapolis, and Brooklyn, NY.
